US Town Gets Rid of Anti-Dancing 'Footloose' Law

US Town Gets Rid of Anti-Dancing 'Footloose' Law Officials in the western Arkansas city of Fort Smith say residents can finally kick off their Sunday shoes. City officials recently repealed a 1953 ordinance that essentially outlawed public dancing on Sundays. Its emergency clause said public dancing on Sunday “greatly endangers the public health, safety and welfare.” Locals who knew about the law called it the Footloose Ordinance, nicknamed after the 1984 movie. Fort Smith City Director Andre Good introduced the repeal after a resident told him about the antiquated law. A city spokesman says no one in Fort Smith has been arrested or ticketed in two decades for dancing on Sundays.
