Hurricane Michael Could Be a Category 3 Storm When It Hits the US Michael, which spun up in the Atlantic, is currently grazing Cuba and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Forecasters expect it to hit Florida’s northern Gulf Coast by late Wednesday. The NHC says Michael could be Category 3 or higher by then, with winds in excess of 110 miles per hour. Storm surges are expected be 7 to 11 feet in some areas. Michael is also expected to pass through the city of Tallahassee, which has a population of 382,000. The state's Governor, Rick Scott, has declared a state of emergency for 26 counties and ordered 500 members of the National Guard to activate.
